The largest and most visible house museum is Bellamy Mansion, a spectacular example of antebellum architecture built between 1859 and 1861 by enslaved artisans and carpenters.
The property, occupied by Dr. John Bellamy, his wife and nine children, consists of the 22-room mansion, the beautifully restored gardens and recently reconstructed carriage house. Slave quarters, among the most intact in the South according to architectural historian Catherine Bishir, have been restored and are an important part of the home’s history.
During one of Bellamy Mansion’s daily tours, hear not only the stories of the Bellamy family, but those of the free and enslaved black artisans who built the home on the eve of the Civil War, and those of the enslaved workers who resided on property.
Bellamy Mansion now focuses on history and the design arts, with several changing exhibitions and special events each year. The Mansion also provides many dynamic educational and cultural programs throughout the year.
Bellamy Mansion also hosts a variety of events annually. Family Fun Day is a free community event where visitors enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, puppies, face painting, balloon animals, storytelling, games, crafts, prizes, a raffle, live music, and MORE! Family Fun Day visitors can purchase souvenirs from the gift shop as well as refreshments such as hot dogs, sodas, and even Fuzzy Peach frozen yogurt. Family Fun Day 2018 is scheduled for Sunday, April 22, from 1-4 pm.
The Harvest Dinner features some of North Carolina’s up-and-coming chefs that take you on a multi-course journey through the freshest ingredients and most innovative dishes the Lower Cape Fear region has to offer!
