New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a teaching hospital and regional referral center. As the tertiary care center for a seven-county area, the medical center offers specialty medical and surgical care. It is one of nine trauma centers in the state certified at Level II or above. Other specialty services include: four adult intensive care units, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, open heart surgery, vascular surgery and oncology services.
