Few cities have the unique and desirable characteristics Wilmington offers visitors, tourists, natives and new residents alike. Our 31 miles of uncrowded, wide sandy beaches overlooking the rolling surf of the magnificent Atlantic Ocean warmed by the Gulf Stream attract many thousands of tourists year after year.
Throughout the metropolitan Wilmington area opportunities abound for shopping, culture, sports, education, recreation, dining, sightseeing and just plain moseying about our fascinating and dynamic cityscape.
Cozily nested between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River, the city of Wilmington is an oasis between bodies of water. Although not actually bordering on the ocean, eastern portions of the city overlook the sounds, Intracoastal Waterway and barrier islands that lie between the city and the ocean. To the west, the city borders the busy Cape Fear River about 30 miles upstream from the open Atlantic Ocean.
The population of 100,000 reached in 2007 reflects Wilmington’s rapid growth, The city not only has become a mecca for retirees seeking relaxed, affordable living on a warm, sunny coast, but younger families and singles are also coming to escape the problems and stress of big-city living, to take advantage of the many entrepreneurial opportunities and to enjoy a better quality of life here.
