Building Everywhere
Getting away from downtown, growth of new neighborhoods is taking place all over the city and outlying areas, with much of it being concentrated along several corridors: the east side near Wrightsville Beach, especially along Military Cutoff Road; the south side along River Road all the way to Carolina Beach; the southeast side along Carolina Beach Road down to Pleasure Island; the northeast side along Market Street through Ogden.
On the east side of the city near Wrightsville Beach, quite a few neighborhoods have developed. Landfall, a private gated community off Eastwood Road begun in 1985, consists of 2,200 acres and 1,900 home sites along the Intracoastal Waterway. A few of the amenities of this staid, upscale community include two clubhouses, 45 holes of golf designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, 14 tennis courts in a sports complex designed by Cliff Drysdale and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Along River Road developments and expensive homes are sprouting up so fast that it’s hard to keep track of them. In fact, River Road is currently being rerouted to facilitate some of this development. Not so many years ago, the only developments between Carolina Beach Road and River Road were The Cape, Beau Rivage Plantation and Echo Farms Golf and Country Club. Today, thousands of homes have been built or are planned for this burgeoning corridor along the Cape Fear River from Downtown Wilmington to Pleasure Island with prices ranging from the millions to under $200,000.
New Condos At Echo Farms
For example, Passage Point, currently under construction, overlooks Echo Farms Golf Course and features condominiums starting in the $190s within walking distance of the Cape Fear River and a nearby marina. Located just minutes both from downtown and the Pleasure Island beaches, this development is convenient to a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities.
Passage Point features large two and three bedroom units in three-story buildings with enclosed foyers and elevators. Great rooms in the units have large glass patio doors opening onto private decks overlooking the golf course. The development also will have a variety of amenities including clubhouse and pool, ponds, natural areas, open green spaces and wooded nature trails. |
