Challenging Golf Near Beaches

There are two wonderful and very different golf courses north of Wilmington, both easily reached from Highway 17 North. Those who live on or visiting Topsail Island or Wrightsville Beach will find these facilities worth their time and money.

NORTH SHORE COUNTRY CLUB

You’ll find North Shore Country Club located in Sneads Ferry just before the bridge to North Topsail Beach. That location contributes to the natural beauty and challenging play that are the hallmarks of this course. Several holes are located along the Intracoastal Waterway, which usually brings a prevailing sea breeze into play. Inland holes offer a respite from that breeze and provide a distinctly different look and feel with the holes bordered by large, mature pine trees.

The course is always very well maintained, which definitely adds to its appeal. North Shore earned 4 stars from Golf Digest and was named one of the best places to play in 2008-09. Among the amenities offered in the large clubhouse are a fully stocked pro shop, bar and restaurant. North Shore is available for such special events as weddings and parties too.

A Holiday Inn Express, located adjacent to the facility, works with North Shore Country Club to provide attractive packages for visitors who are interested in lodging and golf.

CASTLE BAY COUNTRY CLUB

You’ll find a true Scottish style links course at Castle Bay Country Club, located two miles west of Highway 17. The course is an easy 20-minute drive from either Wrightsville Beach or Topsail Island and is the closest semi-private golf facility to Figure Eight Island.

Castle Bay’s 18-hole, par 72 course features five tee boxes, well placed bunkers, tricky water and other hazards that make club selection particularly important, acres of ever-changing, beautiful wetlands (unless you’re in them) and wonderfully true greens that many think are the best in the area.

Castle Bay has a fully stocked pro shop, a talented PGA professional on staff who gives private and group lessons, a snack bar and a patio overlooking the course. Players can practice their skills on the driving range, putting green, sand trap and chipping areas.

BEAU RIVAGE GOLF & RESORT

If you live at or are visiting Carolina Beach, Kure Beach or Fort Fisher, you’ll want to experience the golf available at Beau Rivage Golf and Resort. Beau Rivage is a par 72, 18-hole course that earned a 4-star rating from Golf Digest.

Beau Rivage also has its own resort, featuring spacious villas of 900 square feet equipped with free wi-fi, wet bar, microwave, mini fridge and cable tv. Moderately priced stay and play packages are offered and both individuals or groups can enroll in the Golf School that is available year round with a one day or three complete, intensive days of training available.

The greens at Beau Rivage, which are meticulously maintained, are outstanding and the course drains very quickly, which is a blessing in an area that can receive a lot of rainfall in a short period of time. Watch out for the water – the greens are nestled up to the water on more than one hole.
