Award Winning Courses

A number of golf courses in the Wilmington area have achieved significant recognition for their layout, design, maintenance and overall quality. All  these courses will provide a wonderful way to spend your leisure time.

Beau Rivage Golf and Resort is a par 72, 18-hole course that earned a 4-star rating from Golf Digest. It is the closest golf course for those visiting Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Fort Fisher.

Beau Rivage is the only club in Wilmington with its own resort featuring spacious villas of 900 square feet overlooking the course. The villas are equipped with free wi-fi, wet bar, microwave, mini fridge and cable tv and stay and play packages are offered at moderate prices. Individuals or groups can enroll in the Golf School that is available year round with a one day or three complete, intensive days of training available. The practice facilities include an elevated driving range, chipping and pitching area with a sand bunker and “rough” grass as well as a putting green.

Beau Rivage is always meticulously maintained, a good thing in a course that can prove challenging with its elevation changes of up to 75 feet, blind spots and water hazards. The greens are outstanding and are known for their smoothness and speed. The course drains very quickly, which is a blessing in an area that can receive a lot of rainfall in a short period of time.

The Cape Fear River serves as the backdrop on eight different golf holes at Beau Rivage, which creates beautiful vistas throughout the course. The facility is semi-private and has very attractive rates, especially for a course of this caliber.

Beau Rivage has a beautiful clubhouse and dining facility that is available for weddings, receptions and other special functions. Golf outings also are welcome at Beau Rivage.

CAPE FEAR NATIONAL

The newest golf course in the Wilmington area is Cape Fear National, located in Brunswick Forest, the largest planned communities recently started here. Although the course just opened in April 2010, it is already enjoying great success. Cape Fear National was first named one of Golfweek’s best new courses in 2010, then was honored as one of the ten best new courses by Golf Magazine.

Tim Cate, who is known for his attention to detail and imaginative routing, designed Cape Fear National. He has built a number of courses in the Carolinas that have won awards, but feels this is his best yet. The course winds through heavily undulating land and sweeps past large expanses of maple, oak and magnolia trees as well as cypress and pines. There are very picturesque vistas too, with wildflowers in bloom throughout the course, abundant water features including three waterfalls, and several bridges cut through wetlands.

The driving range features grass hitting areas and there are practice putting and chipping areas too.

The large clubhouse at Cape Fear National has a fully-stocked pro shop as well as both indoor and outdoor dining and/or bar areas. The club is happy to host golf outings and tournaments. It also is possible to rent the facility for such special events as rehearsal dinners, anniversary or birthday parties and family reunions.

Cape Fear National is easily accessible from downtown Wilmington, since it is located just five miles south on Highway 17 in Leland.

MAGNOLIA GREENS GOLF PLANTATION

Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation is the only course in this area that has earned a 4 1/2 star rating from Golf Digest. Tom Jackson designed the 27 holes at Magnolia Greens and his signature two-tiered greens and amorphous bunkers are found throughout. The course features Bermuda grass fairways and large, undulating bent grass greens.

There are five tee boxes on each of the nines and 72 is par for any 18. When played from the short tees, the nine-hole Azalea course suits those who prefer a low-key, stress free round, since from those tees each hole plays to a par 3.

Magnolia Greens has a complete practice facility offering grass tee areas, practice putting and chipping greens, and two bunkers to hone full bunker as well as green-side bunker shots. A restaurant featuring “pub fare with flair” and full bar facilities are available. There also is an outdoor bar located on the back patio of the clubhouse, which has proved to be a popular gathering spot.

Magnolia Greens offers private and semi-private lessons, and has several different golf school packages too, ranging from one-half to three-day schools, taught by highly regarded PGA and LPGA professionals.

Magnolia Greens is located just five miles south of downtown Wilmington in Leland, and was host to PGA Tour qualifiers in 1998 and 1999. The club is happy to welcome corporate or charity golf outings.
