32nd Annual North Carolina Jazz Festival
Thursday, February 2, Wilmington Hilton Riverside Downtown, 7:30 p.m.
Jazz aficionados will flock to the Wilmington Hilton Riverside downtown for a wonderful celebration of jazz performed by outstanding musicians. Seating is reserved in tables of 10 only, but excellent sight lines exist throughout the room. Local phenom Geraldo Frazier will open the festival, followed by songstress Melva Houston and bassist Herman Burney. After an intermission, nine All-Stars (Harry Allen, Burney, John Cocuzzi, Adrian Cunningham, Kevin Dorn, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ed Polcer, Bria Skonberg and Dion Tucker) will present two sets of rousing classic jazz. Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Thalian Hall’s Main Event series continues with the 15-time Grammy-nominated, world-renowned South African vocal ensemble introduced to world audiences thru Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed at two Nobel Peace Prize Ceremonies, for Pope John Paul II in Rome, for President Nelson Mandela, at the Summer Olympics and for the Queen of England at Royal Albert Hall. A film documentary, “On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, the Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo” was nominated for the Academy Award.
