Theater, Music and Nightlife

Wilmington’s geographical distance from larger cities with their considerable cultural activities doesn’t mean we have a dearth of arts offerings. Quite the contrary. Throughout its history, Wilmington has enthusiastically generated and supported artistic endeavors.

Wilmington offers a bountiful and eclectic selection of cultural and entertainment venues for visitors and residents alike to enjoy. Although most of the action is centered in the downtown area, some is scattered throughout the city and also in the suburban and beach communities.

The focal point, and certainly the earliest venue in our cultural scene, is that venerable jewel, Thalian Hall. One of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in the nation, Thalian Hall was built between 1855 and 1858 to satisfy both the cultural and governmental needs of the city.

Thalian Association Founded

When Thalian Hall was constructed, Wilmington was a bustling and growing city with an active theatrical group, Thalian Association, dating back to 1788. Continuing to this day, Thalian Association has contributed substantially to Wilmington’s cultural scene and its importance was recognized when it earned the honor of being named the Official Community Theater of North Carolina. Signs announcing that designation are proundly displayed on major roads leading to Wilmington.
Each year, Thalian Association presents several plays and musicals that are very well received; for five consecutive years it has earned the distinction as Best Theater Production Company by the readers of Encore, a Wilmington weekly publication. Thalian Association’s activities are not limited to theater production. They present the Orange Street Arts Fest in May each year and also produce the Southern Coastal Bluegrass Festival held in September at Fort Fisher. Young thespians are given the opportunity to perform also with the Thalian Association Children’s Theatre offering numerous shows each year that provide training for those ranging from age 7 through high school seniors.
