Cape Fear Serpentarium
Exotic snakes and reptiles
One of the world's leading collections of reptiles is on display in the Cape Fear Serpentarium on Orange Street Downtown.
The owner, Dean Ripa, has collected snakes and other exotic reptiles from around the world. These specimens -- some of the world’s most venomous -- are displayed in simulations of their natural habitats.
The serpentarium’s hundreds of exhibits occupy 6,000 square feet on two floors. Among the exhibits are:
  • 15 species of vipers, including bushmasters, the world’s largest.
  • 13 species of cobra.
  • A 23-foot-long, 200-pound reticulated python.
  • “Lucy,” a giant monitor lizard.
  • Man-eating Nile crocodiles.
   Hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 11-6 Saturday, April-September; 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 11-6 Saturday, closed Tuesday, October-March.
Admission: $8, plus optional $1 ticket for Africa Museum.
   20 Orange St. Downtown. 762-1669.
