Figure Eight Island

Before the turn of the 20th century, the only residents of Figure Eight Island were wild ponies who freely galloped the dunes. But by 1983, this private island had been “discovered” and was rapidly becoming one of the most expensive places to live in the area. Available lots ranged from $95,000 to $125,000 on the sound side. Oceanfront lots were being sold for between $165,000 to $250,000.

Today, there are no available sound side lots remaining and oceanfront lots run from $800,000 to $2.5 million. Existing homes sound side are now being listed for $2.5 to $5.5 million and oceanfront from $2 million to $5 million. Admission to the island was – and still is -- by invitation only. The Figure Eight Island Yacht Club and marina was opened in August 1983; fees are confidential and are separate from home ownership.

Figure Eight Island is a delightful oceanfront community located just 12 miles north of Wilmington, accessible only by crossing a guarded causeway bridge from North Carolina State Road 1402, (Edgewater Club Road) off Highway 17 and Porters Neck Road. This 1,300-acre, five-mile island retreat features only private homes – currently 460, and each one is different. You won’t find cookie-cutter developments. And the homes are gorgeous, most with spectacular ocean, sound or marsh views.
